On Friday, October 16, oompah music by the Double Eagle Oktoberfest Band will greet attendees as they arrive for Oktoberfest in the Society’s 1815 barn. Before the night is out, people will be laughing, singing, and dancing a polka! Included in the $40 ticket price is a delectable German-style meal of knockwurst, German potato salad, warm red cabbage and sauerkraut, and apple crisp topped with whipped cream for dessert. The vegetarian option is Käsespätzle by pre-order when tickets are purchased. Also included are soft drinks and seasonal beers provided by Crafted, including Jack’s Abbey Copper Legend on draft. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the band plays until 10 p.m. Tickets will be available at Celebrate Holliston and at the Harvest Fair, through the Society website via Square (convenience fee applies), or purchased at Crafted or Fiske’s stores in Holliston. The Golden Age of Silent Movies, Wednesday, October 28, 7 p.m.
Join us in the barn for a fun evening reliving the days of the silent movie! Pianist Richard Hughes will present a history of early movies with newsreels, cartoons, early comedy, historical drama, serial thrillers, slap-stick comedy featuring Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin, sight gags and chase scenes done by the king of sight gags, Buster Keaton, all presented with narration and musical accompaniment. Richard will also show sound effects and animation devices, including the praxinoscope. Then, in time for Halloween, there will be a screening of Laurel and Hardy in the funny “Habeas Corpus,” a short film from 1924.
This program is co-presented with the Holliston Public Library and the Friends of the Library. All are welcome, and refreshments will be served. Both programs will be held in the Holliston Historical Society’s barn at 547 Washington Street. The Historical Society is a non-profit group whose mission is to preserve Holliston’s history and share it with our community.
