he 2026 Holliston Memorial Day Parade went on despite inclement weather; Charles Nickerson, over 100, was honored as the town's oldest veteran.
Morning rain didn't stop Holliston from recognizing those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Both the morning's cemetery visits and the parade went on, despite the downpours that began the day. The 2026 Memorial Day ceremony, however, did take place inside rather than outside Holliston Town Hall, after wreaths were placed by VFW Post Commander David DeGanne and American Legion Post 47 Commander Martin Spellacy.
Stephen Bradford served as Officer of the Day, followed by an invocation by Father Mark Coiro of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Speakers Rep. James Arena-DeRosa and Holliston Select Board's Ben Sparrell, followed by the 2026 Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshall and Navy veteran Kristine Westland, who pointed out that this year was not only the 250th anniversary of our nation but also the 25th anniversary of 9/11, saying, "May we never forget those who lost their lives for this country."
Ronald Turcotte, VFW Chaplain, read the names of Holliston veterans who've passed on since last year.
The Sutherland Bagpipe Band played a rendition of "Amazing Grace," followed by
"Taps," performed by Ally Forbes and Elena Matskas, and Adele Boggas sang the National Anthem.
Fr. Timothy Ferguson, Pastor Emeritus at St. George Orthodox Church gave the benediction, after which the parade re-formed and continued to the Holliston Historical Society, where lunch was served to veterans and other parade participants.
