Join mystery and suspense authors Janet Raye Stevens and Sharon Healy-Yang for an engaging, multi-media event revealing some intriguing inspirations for creating a mystery set circa WWII. Using film clips, anecdotes, and excerpts from their books, Janet and Sharon talk about 1940s women in real as well as ‘reel’ life and how these smart, stylish, and wise-cracking gals in books and film inspired their own 1940s-set mysteries.

Art from the Inside, 12-1:30 p.m. 

Art from Inside is a curated selection of works that PBP’s readers and book requestors have sent to us over the course of many decades, often as a token of gratitude for a shipment of books. Many pieces are explicitly book-themed, depicting reading as a temporary escape from the confines of prison or as a vehicle for growth, learning and rehabilitation. Books are liberating for our readers in both senses. Without access to the internet, books often take on a significance to incarcerated people that folks on the outside struggle to understand. The pieces in this exhibit also showcase the detailed techniques that can be achieved with the simplest tools, most commonly ball point pen and pencil. Art from Inside shows how much talent, creativity and human potential resides behind bars.

In this hands-on Alcohol Ink Art Workshop, participants will explore the vibrant, fluid nature of alcohol inks while learning techniques such as blending, layering, and controlled movement. Using non-traditional tools and surfaces, patrons will experiment with color, texture, and composition to create unique abstract artworks. This workshop encourages creative risk-taking, process-based learning, and self-expression, making it accessible and engaging for artists of all experience levels.

Allan Karlsson is a 100-year-old explosives expert who is so bored in a retirement home that he jumps out of a window. Join us in the Holliston Historical Society’s Barn as we meet the woman who hoodwinked George Washington’s army! A Massachusetts native, Deborah Sampson is the only woman known to have disguised herself as a man and serve as a soldier in the Continental Army without getting caught! In honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Deborah is coming to tell her story.

Find out the story-behind-the-story of this principled, dangerous deception and the character of the quiet rebel who pulled it off.

Janet Parnes of Historical Portrayals by Lady J, Millis will portray Deborah Sampson.

A Tasting of Teas from India, Japan and China, 10:30 a.m.—12 p.m. Please Register

Back by Popular Demand!

Discover the rich and diverse world of teas from India, Japan and China in this guided tasting class. Led by Sandeep Hazarika, we will be tasting a total of 5 teas: two bold, malty Assam teas—famous as the foundation of English and Irish Breakfast blends, one delicate, aromatic Darjeeling tea often called the “Champagne of Teas”, one traditional Japanese Sencha green tea and one mid roasted Oolong tea from China. As part of the class, we will explore the origin, history, and cultural significance behind each one.

Throughout the session, we’ll discuss the traditions that shape the flavor and character of every tea you will be tasting. Handmade biscotti from Bakers Lane Biscotti will also be served with the teas.
